Visiting Miami in December

By Miami Tourism Guide · Updated September 25, 2026 · 16 min read

In the first week of December, a parking space on Collins Avenue can be harder to find than a Basquiat. By the second week the art crowd has flown out, the convention center is quiet, and a hotel that cost $900 a night on Friday is asking a fraction of that on Tuesday. Then, around the 20th, the families arrive for the holidays and prices climb straight back up to their highest of the year. Miami in December is really three different months stacked on top of each other, and the difference between a brilliant trip and an expensive, frustrating one is mostly knowing which of the three you are booking.

This guide is about planning December rather than admiring its weather: how Art Basel week, the mid-month lull and the holiday peak compare, what the month costs, the events worth building a trip around, what to do when it is 77°F and dry, and what to pack for the cold front that will almost certainly turn up. Event dates are for 2026, and prices and hours were checked in September 2026; treat them as the right order of magnitude. For the numbers on every month, see our Miami weather by month guide.

The Three Decembers

Art Basel week (about 1–7 December)

Art Basel Miami Beach, the most important contemporary art fair in the Americas, takes over the Miami Beach Convention Center on the first weekend of the month. Around it, Miami Art Week fills the whole city with satellite fairs, gallery openings, brand pop-ups and parties. It is thrilling if you are here for the art or the scene. If you are not, it is the most expensive, most crowded and most traffic-choked week of the year to visit, and you should avoid it.

The mid-December window (about 8–18 December)

This is December’s secret. Once the art crowd leaves and before school holidays start, Miami relaxes. The weather is excellent — dry, sunny, in the high 70s — and hotel prices drop noticeably from both peaks. Restaurants are busy but bookable, the beaches are pleasant and the Everglades are entering their best season. If you have a free choice of dates in December, this is the stretch to book.

The holiday peak (about 19–31 December)

From the weekend before Christmas, Miami is full. Families from the Northeast, the Midwest, Latin America and Europe arrive for winter sun, flights are expensive, hotels impose minimum stays around New Year’s Eve, and the popular restaurants and attractions are packed. It is a festive, lively time to be here, with Christmas lights on the palm trees and one of the country’s biggest New Year’s Eve parties. Just go in knowing that it is the most expensive stretch of the Miami year.

Is December a Good Time to Visit Miami?

For weather, yes, emphatically. December is the heart of the dry season: warm, sunny days, low humidity, very little rain and no hurricane risk. It is the kind of weather that makes a winter trip to Miami feel like a small miracle if you have come from somewhere cold.

For value, it depends entirely on your dates. Mid-December is fine; Art Basel week and the holidays are not. For atmosphere, December is hard to beat — between the art, the holiday lights and New Year’s Eve, the city is buzzing all month. Compare it with the rest of the year in our guide to the best time to visit Miami.

The Weather, Briefly

Expect highs around 77°F, lows around 64°F and less than 2 inches of rain in the whole month. Most days are sunny and dry with a light breeze.

The wild card is the cold front. Several times a winter, a front pushes down the Florida peninsula and drops overnight temperatures into the upper 50s, sometimes lower, for a day or two. It comes with a brisk north wind, rough surf and cloudy skies, and locals get out their puffer jackets with great enthusiasm. It never lasts long, and the next day is usually glorious. Plan one indoor option just in case.

The ocean cools through the month. For visitors from the north, it is still very swimmable on a sunny day; many Miamians consider it too cold. For more detail, see our weather by month guide.

Art Basel Miami Beach (4–6 December 2026)

Art Basel Miami Beach returns to the Miami Beach Convention Center in South Beach on 4–6 December 2026, after invitation-only VIP previews. The main fair is open to the public with a ticket, generally from 11am to 6pm; check the exact public days, hours and prices on Art Basel’s own website, because they vary from year to year and different sources report them differently.

Inside, more than two hundred leading galleries from around the world show modern and contemporary work, and even if you are not buying, it is one of the best art experiences you can have in the United States in a single building. Wear comfortable shoes, arrive early, and give it at least half a day.

Miami Art Week beyond the fair

The main fair is only part of it. During the same week:

  • Satellite fairs pop up across the city, from tents on the beach to Wynwood warehouses, many with cheaper tickets and edgier work.
  • Design Miami, the design fair, runs alongside Art Basel in Miami Beach.
  • Museums such as PAMM, ICA Miami, the Rubell Museum and the de la Cruz Collection open major new shows.
  • Wynwood and the Design District are full of murals, installations, brand activations and parties.
  • Private parties fill the hotels and clubs of Miami Beach every night.

Our Art Basel Miami Beach guide covers the fairs, tickets and strategy in depth, and our guides to the Design District and Wynwood cover the neighborhoods.

The honest downsides

  • Hotel prices in Miami Beach, Wynwood and downtown can be several times their normal rate, with minimum stays. Book months ahead or stay further out.
  • Traffic on the causeways between Miami and Miami Beach can be brutal, especially on weekday evenings. Walk or cycle where possible, and allow far more time than the map suggests.
  • Restaurants are fully booked; reservations for Miami Beach’s best tables disappear weeks ahead.
  • Rideshares surge constantly.

If you are not coming for the art, schedule your December trip for later in the month.

Christmas and the Holidays

Christmas in Miami is not a white Christmas, and that is precisely its charm. Palm trees wrapped in lights, a Christmas tree beside Biscayne Bay, Cuban Nochebuena feasts on Christmas Eve, and a morning swim on Christmas Day make it memorable in a way that no snow-globe city can match. Our Christmas in Miami guide covers the holiday events, lights and markets in detail, so here are the planning essentials.

Holiday events

  • Santa’s Enchanted Forest, the huge holiday theme park with rides, lights and food stalls, has run for decades; it most recently moved from Tropical Park to Hialeah Park. Check its 2026 dates and location before planning a visit.
  • Holiday lights transform parks, gardens, hotels and neighborhoods across the city, and several attractions run special evening light events for the season.
  • Hanukkah begins on the evening of 4 December 2026. Miami Beach has one of the largest Jewish communities in the country, and public menorah lightings take place around the city.
  • Boat parades of illuminated yachts take place in December up and down the coast, including a famous one in Fort Lauderdale.

Nochebuena

For Miami’s huge Cuban-American community, the big celebration is Christmas Eve — Nochebuena — with a whole roast pig, black beans and rice, yuca and late-night family gatherings. Some Cuban restaurants and bakeries sell Nochebuena dinners to take away; order ahead if you want to join in.

Christmas Day practicalities

Many independent restaurants, shops and some attractions close on Christmas Day, and some also close early on Christmas Eve. Hotel restaurants and many chains stay open, often with set holiday menus. Book Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals well in advance, and check opening hours for anything you plan to do.

New Year’s Eve

Miami throws one of the biggest New Year’s Eve parties in the United States, and it is one of the few truly big nights here that does not have to cost a fortune.

The Countdown at Bayfront Park

Miami’s official New Year’s Eve celebration at Bayfront Park, downtown on the bay, has in recent years been free to the public, with doors opening in the late afternoon, big-name Latin and pop performers through the evening, and fireworks over the water at midnight. Check the 2026 program and entry rules when they are announced. Arrive early; the park fills up, and roads around Biscayne Boulevard close. The Metromover is the easiest way in and out.

Beaches, clubs and boats

  • Miami Beach has its own fireworks and celebrations along the sand. Expect big crowds in South Beach.
  • Clubs and hotel parties sell tickets at eye-watering prices for the night. If you want a club, book early; if you want value, avoid it.
  • Fireworks cruises on Biscayne Bay offer the best view of the downtown display. Book well ahead, and read the fine print about drinks and timings.

New Year’s Eve logistics

Hotels often require minimum stays of three nights or more over New Year’s. Rideshares surge dramatically after midnight, and waits can be long; staying within walking distance of where you celebrate is worth a lot. Our Miami nightlife guide covers the clubs and bars.

Making the Most of the Mid-December Window

If your dates are flexible, the stretch between the end of Art Basel and the start of school holidays is one of the best-kept secrets of the Miami year, and it rewards a little planning.

Start by booking the hotel you would never pay for at New Year. In the second week of December, oceanfront rooms in South Beach and Mid-Beach often cost a fraction of their holiday-week rates, and some of the city’s best-known hotels offer their most generous deals of the winter. Fly midweek if you can; the Tuesday and Wednesday flights either side of the Art Basel weekend tend to be the cheapest.

Use the calm to book the things that are hard to get later. Restaurant reservations that are impossible between Christmas and New Year are much easier in mid-December, as are boat tours, fishing charters and tables at the rooftop bars. Many Art Basel installations in Wynwood and the Design District stay up for days or weeks after the fair ends, so you can see some of the art without the crowds. The Christmas lights and holiday decorations are already up, and the city is festive without being frantic.

This is also the best part of December for day trips. The Everglades are entering their prime, the drive to the Keys is quiet before the holiday traffic, and hotels in Key West are still reasonable before Christmas week. If you want a taste of Miami’s winter at something closer to shoulder-season prices, this is it.

December for Families

School holidays make the last ten days of December a family-heavy time in Miami, and attractions plan for it. Expect long lines at the most popular places, and book timed tickets online wherever you can. Zoo Miami, Frost Science and Jungle Island are all busy between Christmas and New Year, so go early in the day.

A few tips help families enjoy the peak. Build in beach days, which need no booking and cost little. Choose a hotel with a pool and a kitchen, or a vacation rental, to save on holiday restaurant prices. Pick one big evening outing — holiday lights or a boat parade — rather than trying to do everything. And if your children are young, New Year’s Eve fireworks from a hotel balcony or a quieter stretch of beach may be a better idea than the crowds of Bayfront Park.

Crowds and Prices in December

Dates Crowds Hotel prices Verdict
1–7 December Very busy (Art Basel) Very high Only if you are here for the art
8–18 December Moderate Reasonable The best-value window
19–26 December Busy High Festive, but book early
27–31 December Very busy Highest of the year Expect minimum stays

Flights follow the same pattern, with the most expensive fares on the days before Christmas and around New Year. Rental cars sell out in the holiday period, so reserve early. Our Miami vacation cost guide can help you budget.

What to Do in Miami in December

December’s weather opens up the whole city, and some experiences are at their very best now.

The Everglades

The dry season is fully underway in December, and it is one of the best months for the Everglades. Water levels fall, wildlife concentrates around the remaining pools, and the mosquitoes are far less troublesome. The Anhinga Trail, with alligators basking beside the boardwalk, is at its most rewarding, and Shark Valley, the closest entrance to Miami, is excellent for a bike ride or tram tour. Our Everglades tour guide covers the options.

Zoo Miami and the gardens

Cooler weather makes December a great month for Zoo Miami, where the animals are more active and the long walks between exhibits are pleasant rather than exhausting. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, 83 acres and more than 3,400 species, is open daily from 10am to 5pm, and adult tickets are $24.95. Our Zoo Miami guide and outdoors and nature guide have the details.

Beaches

December beach days are sunny, uncrowded outside the holiday period and far less intense than in summer. The water is cooler, so bring a towel and your sense of adventure. After a cold front, check the flags for rough surf.

Neighborhoods and nightlife

Dry, mild evenings are perfect for exploring Wynwood’s murals, the Art Deco District, Little Havana and Coconut Grove on foot, and for the rooftop bars of Brickell and downtown.

Key West and the Keys

December is a lovely month for a drive down the Overseas Highway to Key West, around three and a half hours each way, but hotels there are expensive over the holidays. Our Key West day trip guide has the details.

Where to Stay in December

For Art Basel, a hotel in Miami Beach within walking distance of the convention center saves hours of traffic, if you can afford it. Staying in downtown or Brickell is a cheaper alternative, as long as you budget time for the causeways.

For Christmas and New Year, Miami Beach puts you on the sand and close to the fireworks; downtown puts you next to Bayfront Park’s New Year’s Eve party. In the mid-December window, almost anywhere is good value. Our guide to where to stay in Miami compares the neighborhoods.

Getting Around in December

Traffic is the main December headache. During Art Basel, the MacArthur, Venetian and Julia Tuttle causeways back up at rush hour and in the evenings. Over the holidays, the malls and I-95 are packed, and on New Year’s Eve, Biscayne Boulevard closes around Bayfront Park. The free Metromover, walking and bikes are your friends in downtown and South Beach. Our Miami transportation guide covers every option.

What to Pack for December

  • Summer clothes and swimwear for the day.
  • A light jacket or sweater for evenings, and a warmer layer in case a cold front arrives.
  • Long pants or a dress for nicer restaurants and holiday dinners.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for Art Basel and the Everglades.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses; the winter sun is still strong.
  • Something festive for New Year’s Eve.
